LETTERS: Vote ‘No’ on tax repeal
Norton -TO THE EDITOR:
Question 1 on the November 2008 ballot will ask to repeal the 5.3 percent Massachusetts state income tax. In Norton, state aid funds nearly half of the municipal and educational services, although it is being reduced annually to correspond with the local per capita income. Norton is at its levy limit and property taxes can’t be raised by more than 2 1/2 percent annually. The majority of Norton voters have consistently opposed property tax overrides.

Norton -Norton Fire Department received and responded to 115 calls and performed 31 inspections during Aug. 13 to 25. The calls included 58 medical emergencies, four motor vehicle accidents, eight fire, smoke or leak calls, 22 alarms, 15 public assistance calls and eight calls for mutual aid, six to Mansfield and twice to Attleboro.

Norton -The following is a sample of calls Norton Police Department received and responded to during the week of Aug. 13 to 22.
Wednesday, Aug. 132:20 a.m. - Caller reported loud subjects on Bay Road, men yelling at each other and a woman yelling for everyone to leave. Officers responded, placed an 18-year-old Taunton man in protective custody.
